What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma is the merger of two approaches to building a better organization intended to produce less waste, with less cost, and fewer defects.  Six Sigma as a methodology grew out of work at Motorola in the 1980's when they - and many other great corporations - were deploying quality management systems based on the works of Deming and Juran.  It was popularized in the 1990's by General Electric.  Lean is the short name for a version of the Toyota Production System.  Both Quality and Lean have their roots in the post WWII recovery.

Six Sigma is ...

  • Striving for near perfection
  • A disciplined methodology: such as DMAIC
  • < 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO)
  • Measure-based / Data-driven
  • Incremental improvement over time (Yellow, Green, Black, Master Black Belts)
  • The difference between "Good" and "Great"

Lean is...

  • Reduction of Wasted Time, Space Motion, Resources

Lean Six Sigma is...

A Rigorous Problem Solving Process + Statistical Data Analysis Tools + Lean Efficiency Tools all within the Context of a Quality Managmement System
